Join us on May 10 for our event, Too Many Algorithms, Not Enough Serendipity, with our key speaker John Fanning, Branding and Marketing Communications lecturer in the Smurfit Business School, and Chairman, Brand Forum Steering Group, Bord Bia. This event will be held at EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum in the Liffey Corner room.
Both IAPI members, €20 per ticket, and Non-IAPI members, €30 per ticket, are welcome to this event. There will be a 9:30am breakfast reception with delicious pastries and plenty of tea, coffee and juice, followed by our main event from 10-11am.
Short of a major technological breakthrough there’s no more effective way to significantly enhance the fortunes of a business than a transformational creative marketing communications campaign. They’re still around but there seems to be less of them. Les Binet and Peter Field have recorded the decline in creative effectiveness over the last twenty years. Other commentators, notably Orlando Wood, have indicated that wider societal forces may be responsible for the decline, but solutions are in short supply.
In this talk, John Fanning will explore some possible solutions based on the observation that the problem did not start with the digital economy in the 21st century, but with the financialisation of the economy in the last quarter of the twentieth century. The resulting obsession with maximising shareholder revenue left us on the side-line, emasculated by algorithms and procedures at the expense of the serendipity and substance required for great creative work.
During the last few years, the tide has turned, capitalism is being re-imagined and businesses are starting to engage in a different conversation with the public addressing issues like climate change, inequality, diversity and how we ought to live. The advertising and marketing industry is uniquely qualified to help fulfil this task. We have done it in the past; we can do it again.
John is arguably Ireland’s foremost brand guru. Formerly, Managing Director and Chairman of McConnells Advertising, he now lectures in Branding and Marketing Communications at the Smurfit Business School and serves as the Chairman of the Brand Forum Steering Group, Bord Bia.
He authored 'The Importance of Being Branded: An Irish Perspective' (Liffey Press) and is a regular contributor on branding and marketing communications in Irish Marketing Review, Marketing Magazine and the Irish Times.
