Advertising has a problem...

Many of our finest minds have been squeezed out of the industry. The reasons offered are many. And most are little more than excuses. This is a diversity issue, as relevant as gender, race and socio-economic diversity.

To tackle the issue, and to celebrate those great advertising and marketing minds of those over 50, IAPI, in partnership with Standard Life, has created the Cannes Grey Lions.

The Cannes Grey Lions is a world first for Ireland. An idea whose time has come.

They say there’s no substitute for experience and we plan to prove it.

Who Can Enter?

To be eligible to compete in the competition the team must be made up of two people (50 years of age or older - date of birth must be on or before 22 June 1970) who work or have worked in Advertising, Marketing or Media agencies, including freelancers.

Creatives, media planners, suits, managing directors, editors, photographers... whatever your background, as long as you’ve got a connection to advertising, you can enter!

Don't worry if you haven't got a creative partner, we'll team you up, but if you really want to compete solo that's fine too.

Each team needs to approach one (or two) IAPI member agencies to nominate them for the competition. And, if needed, those agencies will provide you a space to work over the competition weekend. We will confirm your agency sponsor with you after registration.

The Briefing
The Briefing

The Cannes Grey Lions briefing event will take place at on Friday 27th Sept in Teeling Whiskey Distillery, followed by a whiskey tasting.

Competitors must register and attend this event where a chosen charity will issue their brief. Each team will be required to create a stand-out, captivating, and unique creative idea to promote a specific ask for the charity.

The response needs to include a clear Creative Idea together with a couple of executions as to how the idea can be executed across at least two media channels plus a 300 word summary document to explain the concept. Further details will be given at the briefing.

Competitors will have 48 hours to work on their submissions, akin to the Cannes Young Lions competition, with responses due no later than 12 noon on Monday 30th Sept.

The Prize

IAPI, thanks to our generous sponsors, will provide the competition winners with an all expenses paid trip to the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, 22-26 June 2020 including a full festival pass, flights Dublin/Nice, accommodation, and access to all the Cannes seminars, award ceremonies, showcases and material.

Entry Fee

There is no entry fee for this competition as it is kindly sponsored by Standard Life.

Your entry will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Creativity (50% of vote) - Is the work innovative and surprising or have you seen similar work before?
  • Strategy & Insight (20% of vote) - Is there a strong idea at the heart that brings the campaign together?
  • Relevancy to brief (20% of vote) - Does the work answer the clients brief?
  • Execution (10% of vote) - Is there rigour in the execution? Would the campaign work? How well crafted is the work?
